The Historical Society of Fort Meade Florida Inc. was established in 1976 to preserve and promote the history of Fort Meade and surrounding communities. Located in the heart of Polk County, Florida, the Society has focused on preserving the rich history of the area and educating the public about it.

The Society is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization that collects, preserves, and makes accessible a wide range of materials that relate to the history of the area. Its collection includes photographs, documents, artifacts, and other materials related to the area's history. It also collects oral histories from older generations and interviews with local historians, and it hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

Racoon Family (2) Some masked bandits I encountered recently although not on Halloween. There was a family of 1 adult and 4 young racoons on my last visit to the Circle B Bar. Unfortunately it was before sunrise so a little tough to get good shots but I got a few.

Circle B Bar Reserve Sunrise 9_24 (3) Had to share one more of the stunning #sunrise from Sunday morning at the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida.
Delaware Skipper After the colorful sunrise I was not finding many of my normal subjects. In the past I would have called the day a failure. Instead I pivoted to photographing smaller subjects like this Delaware Skipper. Check out the water droplets on its back and on the grass behind it. The main difference between moths, butterflies, and skippers is in the antennae. Butterflies have thread-like antennae that are thickened or knobbed at the end. Skippers have thread-like, knobbed antennae as well, but the knobs are tipped with distinct hooks.
Visit to Bok Tower Gardens (Lake Wales, Florida) - Friday July 7th, 2023 I tacked on a visit to the beautiful Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales after my visit to Lake Kissimmee State Park. This was a beautiful spot and I am so glad that I stopped there. There was a thunderstorm that passed through during my visit, but it was spectacular. From their site: "Located atop Iron Mountain, the highest point on the Lake Wales Ridge, is an impressive destination for birders, botanists and butterfly enthusiasts alike. Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and is famous for its cultivated gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. However, the site also includes the Pine Ridge Nature Preserve, a 100-acre sandhill ecosystem comprised of longleaf pines and turkey oaks. Walk the trail through this preserve for Gopher Tortoise and birds like American Kestrel, Common Nighthawk, Pileated Woodpecker, Loggerhead Shrike and Bachman’s Sparrow. Check the cultivated gardens for butterflies and hummingbirds in spring and summer, as well as migratory songbirds during September and October, and again in April.
