Messier 20 / M20 / NGC 6514 / The Trifid Nebula

The Lagoon Nebula (left) is a giant interstellar cloud about 5,000 light-years away. It is a vast stellar nursery roughly 110 x 50 light-years in size (much larger than the famous Orion Nebula). The red color comes from ionized hydrogen, and the blue from doubly ionized oxygen.

The Trifid Nebula (right) is another interstellar cloud about 4,100 light-years away. It is a rare triple combination of emission nebula (red/blue from ionized hydrogen/oxygen again), reflection nebula (darker blue on the right side, from dust reflecting starlight), and dark nebula.

My unmodified camera is mostly blind to the red hydrogen emission (only ~25% passes through the filter), so the blue oxygen is much brighter. A modified DSLR or an astro camera will show much more red emission. I plan on shooting this target again in 2025 with my new setup!

This was the oldest unfinished image in the archive. I'm not sure why I put it off for so long (actually I do, it's called executive dysfunction). I'm trying to process and upload photos more frequently now that I have more energy to do stuff besides only working and surviving every day, but it's still a struggle.
