The Boca Grande Lighthouse is located in Boca Grande, Florida. It is a historic lighthouse that was built in 1890 to guide ships entering the harbor of Charlotte Harbor. It stands at 65 feet tall and is made of brick and cast iron. The lighthouse is still in operation, and its light can be seen up to 20 nautical miles away.

The exterior of the lighthouse is painted white and topped with a black lantern room. The lantern room contains a first-order Fresnel lens that is still in use today. It is one of the largest, most powerful lenses in the world and emits a fixed, red light.

The lighthouse is located on the southern tip of the barrier island of Gasparilla at the entrance of Boca Grande Pass. It is surrounded by a beautiful landscape of white-sand beaches, mangrove swamps, and tropical vegetation.

The lighthouse is open to the public every day, and visitors can climb to the top and take in the views of the surrounding area. There is also a museum located at the base of the lighthouse which houses artifacts from the area's history and photographs of the lighthouse.

Visitors to the lighthouse can also check out the nearby beaches, fishing charters, and the Gasparilla Island State Park. The Boca Grande Lighthouse is a must-see for anyone visiting the area and an important part of Florida's maritime history.

20241121-USDA-FNS-DK- 0001 Between November 21 and 23, 2024, personnel from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) observed the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) operation for residents from around the Port Charlotte area, Florida, after Hurricanes Helene (September 26) and Milton (October 9).

D-SNAP is a nutrition assistance program with temporary eligibility standards that serves disaster survivors. Typically, eligible households receive one month of benefits issued via an EBT card, which can be used to purchase food at most grocery stores. FNS approves D-SNAP operations in a disaster-affected area under the authority of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act when the area has received a Presidential disaster declaration for Individual Assistance (IA).

FNS employees are deployed as “D-SNAP Monitors” at the site locations in an “observer” role only. Their duty is to ensure each D-SNAP site operates within the approved DSNAP waiver. D-SNAP Monitors report back to SERO management the status of operations at the site, concerns or issues. D-SNAP Monitors serve as the “on the ground” communications link between State, SERO and National Office. They also refer disaster-related policy questions, or media inquiries back to the FNS Regional Office. The five areas of focus for each DSNAP site daily include: (1) application of policy/procedures; (2) adherence to approved hours of operations; (3) level of staffing to determine gaps in applicant services; (4) special needs process to ensure Federal compliance, and (5) security for staff and applicants.
State agencies must formally request FNS approval to operate a D-SNAP within a disaster area(s). DSNAP eligibility has basic criteria such as: resided (or worked) in a disaster area; experienced adverse effects due to the disaster like food loss or incurred out-of-pocket disaster-related expenses, and households must meet income limits. Verification rules are eased during a disaster to reduce administrative burden, but identity of the head of household must be verified and residency/household composition can be verified, if questionable. DSNAP is for “new” households not receiving SNAP and if approved, receive one month’s maximum SNAP allotment on an EBT card.

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is responsible for implementing D-SNAP according to the approved waiver request terms and conditions. DCF is responsible for all the logistics in terms of identifying site locations, staffing, training, security, language services, IT, public outreach of DSNAP operations, and overall management of the DSNAP operations.
