The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC is a world-renowned museum and research complex that was established in 1846 as a trust to be administered by the United States government. It is the world's largest museum and research complex, with 19 museums, 9 research centers, and over 140 affiliates worldwide. The Smithsonian Institution is a non-profit, non-partisan organization committed to the increase and diffusion of knowledge.
