The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is an independent scientific organization located in Washington D.C. Established in 1863, it is one of the oldest scientific organizations in the United States and is devoted to the advancement of science and its use for the betterment of humanity. The NAS is made up of over 2,000 members and foreign associates from many different fields of science and engineering, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and medicine.
The primary mission of the NAS is to provide objective, scientifically sound advice on issues of science, engineering, and health. It also works to advance scientific knowledge by recognizing outstanding scientific achievements and conducting research in areas of science and technology. Additionally, the NAS provides opportunities for the public to engage with science through public lectures, educational programs, and publications.
The Academy is governed by its members, who are elected by their peers. Its activities are overseen by the Council, a body composed of members elected for three-year terms. The Council is responsible for setting the Academy's budget, approving its programs and activities, and appointing committees.
The NAS publishes a number of publications, including its website and the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It also awards a number of prizes, medals, and awards, including the National Medal of Science, the National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology and Genetics, and the NAS Award for Chemistry. The NAS also provides grants and fellowships to individuals and organizations that are working to advance science.
