The United States Navy Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard since 1775. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C. just steps away from the U.S. Capitol and National Mall, the memorial serves as both a tribute to the service and sacrifice of these brave individuals and a gathering place for veterans, family members, and the general public.
The Memorial Plaza is the centerpiece of the foundation and features the Lone Sailor statue. This bronze, seven-foot-tall sculpture depicts a sailor gazing towards the sea with a duffel bag at his side, symbolizing the journeys of all those who have served in the Navy. The plaza also features the Navy Log, a granite wall engraved with the names of over 1.2 million Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard service members.
The foundation also offers educational programming such as Navy Heritage Tours, lectures, and workshops. The foundation’s flagship program is the Annual Navy Birthday Ball, which celebrates the birth of the U.S. Navy and brings together former and current service members from all branches of the armed forces to commemorate and recognize the accomplishments of the Navy throughout history.
