TENLEYTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Tenleytown Historical Society (THS) was founded in 1962 to promote and preserve the rich history and cultural heritage of Tenleytown, Washington DC. The Society acts as a steward for the area’s history, collecting and preserving documents, photographs, artifacts, and oral histories that tell the story of the Tenleytown community. THS sponsors an annual Tenleytown Day celebration, which features living history, educational activities, and entertainment.

The Society is currently working on several projects to preserve the history of the area. The Tenleytown Historic District is an effort to catalog and preserve the many historic buildings and sites that are associated with Tenleytown’s past. The Tenleytown Oral History Project, which began in 2012, is an effort to collect and preserve oral histories from longtime residents and other stakeholders in the area. THS also maintains an online archive of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts related to Tenleytown’s past.

In addition to its preservation efforts, THS also sponsors educational and public programs such as lectures, walking tours, and reenactments. In March of each year, the Society hosts a Tenleytown History Fair, which features presentations, interactive activities, and more.

The Tenleytown Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and is supported by donations and volunteer work. For those interested in learning more about the history of Tenleytown, the Society’s website is an excellent resource.
