The Lepidopterists Society in Washington DC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and conservation of butterflies and moths. Founded in 1947, it is the oldest and largest organization of its kind in the world. Its mission is to foster scientific research, conservation, education, and public appreciation of Lepidoptera worldwide.

The Society welcomes members from all countries and provides a wide range of scientific, educational, and conservation activities. It publishes the peer-reviewed journal American Entomologist, conducts field trips and symposia, provides grants to students and researchers, and hosts the annual International Lepidopterists Conference. It also organizes several local events each year, such as day trips to local parks and gardens to observe butterflies, and annual meetings with guest speakers.

The Society also works closely with other organizations to promote butterfly and moth conservation and research. Through its projects, the Society has established butterfly and moth research sites throughout Washington DC and has conducted research on species such as the Monarch Butterfly, the Baltimore Checkerspot, and the endangered Karner Blue butterfly. It is also actively involved in research into the effects of climate change on butterfly populations. The Society is committed to providing resources and support to those interested in Lepidoptera and their conservation.
