The Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art in Washington DC are the largest repository of primary source documentation of the history of the visual arts in the United States. It was founded in 1954 by the Smithsonian Institution and includes more than 21 million documents, including manuscripts, photographs, diaries, letters, drawings, sketches, and other materials.

The Archives of American Art collects, preserves, and makes available for research the personal papers, photographs, and other original records of the visual arts in the United States, from the colonial period to the present. The collection includes the records of artists, galleries, museums, art organizations, art historians, and others involved in the history of the visual arts.

The Archives' Washington DC research facility houses the largest collection of primary source documents related to the history of the visual arts in the United States. It includes more than 20 million items, including manuscripts, photographs, diaries, letters, drawings, sketches, and other materials. The facility also offers a research library, a public reading room, and an art reference desk.

The Archives of American Art also offers educational programs, including lectures, symposia, workshops, and other activities. The program aims to encourage research, appreciation, and understanding of the visual arts in the United States. The Archives also offers fellowships to encourage and support research in the visual arts.
