The Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art in Washington DC are the largest repository of primary source documentation of the history of the visual arts in the United States. It was founded in 1954 by the Smithsonian Institution and includes more than 21 million documents, including manuscripts, photographs, diaries, letters, drawings, sketches, and other materials.

The facility also offers a research library, a public reading room, and an art reference desk.

The Archives of American Art also offers educational programs, including lectures, symposia, workshops, and other activities. The program aims to encourage research, appreciation, and understanding of the visual arts in the United States. The Archives also offers fellowships to encourage and support research in the visual arts.
