HOWARD UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY

Howard University Art Gallery is a public gallery located in Washington, DC. It was established in 1937 and is dedicated to showcasing the works of established and emerging African American artists. It is currently housed in the historic Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, a Gothic Revival building built in 1895.

The gallery’s permanent collection consists of over 300 artworks that span the history of African American art from the 19th century to the present. The collection includes works by iconic figures such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Elizabeth Catlett, in addition to more contemporary artists like Kerry James Marshall, Renée Stout, and Wangechi Mutu.

The gallery’s mission is to promote a deeper understanding of the African Diaspora and to create meaningful connections between the university and the community. To this end, the gallery hosts a variety of exhibitions and events throughout the year, including lectures, workshops, and artist talks. In addition, the gallery also offers educational programming for students, teachers, and the general public.
