The Octagon Museum, located in Washington DC, is a historic landmark and house museum owned by the American Architectural Foundation. Built in 1799 and restored in the late 19th century, it is one of the oldest surviving Federal-style homes in the city. The museum showcases the rich history of the building and its occupants, including the first President and First Lady of the United States, George and Martha Washington.

The museum is housed in the former home of Colonel John Tayloe III, a successful businessman and plantation owner from Virginia. It was the first home in Washington DC to receive running water, thanks to a gravity-fed water system installed in 1802. The house was built to be an architectural showpiece, featuring an octagonal drawing room, curved staircases, and a two-story portico.

The museum houses an extensive collection of furniture, art, and artifacts associated with its various occupants. Exhibits include an original Gilbert Stuart painting of George Washington, a silver tea service owned by the Washingtons, and a desk once used by President James Madison. The museum also features a number of interactive exhibits, including an interactive map of colonial Washington DC, a virtual tour of the house, and a 3D printing lab.

The Octagon Museum offers a variety of educational programs, guided tours, and special events throughout the year. It is a popular destination for school groups, history buffs, and tourists alike, and provides visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the nation’s capital.
