The Smithsonian Institution Archives in Washington, DC, is the official repository for the records created by and related to the Smithsonian Institution. The archives was established in 1967 and is one of the oldest archival institutions in the United States. The collections in the archives span the history of the Smithsonian, from the early days of James Smithson’s will, which established the Institution in 1846, to the present.

The archives holds more than 36,000 linear feet of records, including correspondence, photographs, publications, reports, and other objects. These materials document the activities of the Smithsonian and its staff, as well as the history of science, education, and culture in the United States.

The archives also holds a number of special collections. These include the papers of prominent Smithsonian figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Joseph Henry, and George Brown Goode; collections of rare books and manuscripts; and the records of Smithsonian museums and research centers.

The archives is open to the public by appointment and offers reference services and educational programs. It also publishes scholarly articles, books, and an online newsletter. The archives is an important resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in the history of the Smithsonian Institution.
