The Smithsonian Institution Archives in Washington, DC, is the official repository for the records created by and related to the Smithsonian Institution. The archives was established in 1967 and is one of the oldest archival institutions in the United States. The collections in the archives span the history of the Smithsonian, from the early days of James Smithson’s will, which established the Institution in 1846, to the present.

The archives holds more than 36,000 linear feet of records, including correspondence, photographs, publications, reports, and other objects. These materials document the activities of the Smithsonian and its staff, as well as the history of science, education, and culture in the United States.

The archives also holds a number of special collections. These include the papers of prominent Smithsonian figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Joseph Henry, and George Brown Goode; collections of rare books and manuscripts; and the records of Smithsonian museums and research centers.

The archives is open to the public by appointment and offers reference services and educational programs. It also publishes scholarly articles, books, and an online newsletter. The archives is an important resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in the history of the Smithsonian Institution.

We believe that cars are an important part of our history and culture. Loved by millions, enthusiast vehicles and the lifestyle that revolves around them are an important part of our cultural fabric as a society and provide significant economic impact. We envision a future where all vehicles regardless of age, power source or mode of operation coexist on public roadways. The Foundation organizes the annual 'Cars at the Capital on the Mall. This year's event ran from August 31 to September 11, 2023, featuring a 1952 Porsche shown Above and a 1937 Cord 812 Convertible Phaeton Sedan – Chassis No. 1714 (owned by Amelia Earhart less than a year before she, her navigator, and her Lockheed 10E Electra disappeared over the South Pacific in 1937). Sharing America’s automotive heritage is an integral part of ensuring it is never lost or forgotten. Through the Foundation's annual Cars at the Capital exhibition, vehicles added to the National Historic Vehicle Register are exhibited in a beautifully lit glass enclosure one at a time. IMG_0183

Smithsonian Museum of Natural History As a little boy, Bryce's favorite animal was the penguin. We saw these penguins in a diorama at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. The photo was taken in July 1984.
