Bald Eagles with Eyes on the Prize Although I've seen a few Bald Eagles, <i>Haliaeetus leucocephalus, </i>during previous trips to Bombay Hook, I was more than surprised to find three actively feeding near the main road through the refuge. What was more surprising, while standing at the side of the road scanning the mudflats and marshes with my binoculars, I was able to count 118 eagles. Evidently the refuge is a favorite stopover when fish are spawning as the eagles migrate to the north. Someone else reported counting 138 eagles there the same week. This is the actual scene, not AI.
