Historic Red Clay Valley is a unique recreational and educational destination located in Wilmington, Delaware. This area is significant for its deep roots in Delaware’s industrial history, and its ongoing importance as a recreation destination.
The Red Clay Valley is made up of a 12-mile long valley, situated between the communities of Greenville and Hockessin. This area was an integral part of the Industrial Revolution, as it provided the resources for one of the nation’s largest iron forges. The Red Clay Valley is also the home of the Wilmington & Western Railroad, which is a historic tourist railroad that provides year-round excursion rides.
The Red Clay Valley is now part of the National Park System and is part of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. The corridor is a 165-mile historic trail connecting industrial sites, natural areas and heritage resources.
The Red Clay Valley is also home to several parks and preserves, including the White Clay Creek Preserve, which is a natural area with over 6,000 acres of woodlands, wetlands, meadows, and streams. The area is home to a number of historic sites and museums, including the Hagley Museum and Library, which is a National Historic Landmark. The Red Clay Valley is also home to the Delaware Museum of Natural History, which is a natural history museum dedicated to the research and education of the natural world.
