The Fort Miles Historic District, located in Dover, Delaware, is an important historical area. The site was constructed in 1941-1942 as part of the United States’ defense efforts during World War II. It was named after Major General Nelson A. Miles, who was the highest ranking officer of the US Army at the time. The area consists of a variety of buildings, including a large command post, barracks, storehouses, and artillery magazines. The main feature of the district is the massive concrete and steel coastal defense battery, which was designed to protect the Delaware Bay from a possible attack by German U-boats.

The district is largely intact and has been preserved as a National Historic Landmark. It is now managed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the battery, the command post, and the various other structures. Interpretive panels provide information about the history and significance of the fort. The district also includes a museum and a nearby beach, where visitors can explore the shoreline and watch for local wildlife. The area is perfect for those interested in history, nature, or just a peaceful day outdoors.
