Hank Williams, Senior, Boyhood Home and Museum is located in Georgiana, Alabama, the birthplace of one of the most influential American country music singers, Hank Williams. The house, built in 1902, was the home of Hank’s parents, Lon and Lillie, and was the place where Hank spent the first 12 years of his life. The museum was opened in 2003, and it serves as a tribute to Hank’s life and legacy.

The two-story white house features a front porch, and it is decorated with period furnishings and memorabilia. Hiram Williams lived in Georgiana from age 7 to 11. In 1931, Mrs. Lillie Williams moved Hiram and his sister Irene from rural Wilcox County to this house owned by Thaddeus B. Rose. When he was 8, his mother bought him a guitar for $3.50. Black street musician Rufus (Tee-Tot) Payne became his teacher. Hiram practiced guitar under the raised-cottage house and sang on the streets for tips. The family moved to Greenville in the fall of 1934 and then to Montgomery in 1937 where, at age 14, Hiram began calling himself ‘Hank.’

Butler county Courthouse - Greenville, AL The first courthouse on the site was built in 1822; the current, fourth, courthouse was completed in 1903. There is a hipped roof with cross gable extensions, a center clock tower topped with a small dome, stone beltcourses and window lintels designed by architect B. B. Smith. The marble front at the main entrance was added much more recently. It is part of the East Commerce Street Historic District which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Evergreen Baptist Church - Evergreen, AL The congregation dates back to 1845. The building was constructed in a Tudor Revival style and dedicated Feb. 2, 1908.

While watching Westerns at a Georgiana ‘picture show’ on Saturdays in 1931-34, young Hiram Williams developed a fondness for cowboy nicknames and clothing. After his family moved to Montgomery in 1936, he began calling himself ‘Hank.’ Fred McClendon opened the GA~ANA Theatre on Jan. 31, 1939. Eight months later, 16-year-old Hank performed here with his band, The Drifting Cowboys. The movie theatre closed in 1959 and was used for storage and a cabinet shop. When demolition was threatened in 1996, J.C. Sims purchased the theatre. It was renovated for movies and live performances and reopened in 1999.

On the day I was here in Sept. 2017, there was a sign in the window that the Theater is for sale. Sources say that the original marquee has been kept, but needs money to be put back in place.
