STANTON HOUSE

CLINTON, CT

Stanton House is a historic residence located in Clinton, Connecticut. Built in 1817, this two-story, five-bay Federal-style structure is set on a hill overlooking the Indian River. The house was built by Captain George Stanton and his wife, Sarah, who were both active in the Clinton community.

The house is constructed of brick with a gable roof and a center-hall plan. On the exterior, the house features a two-story pedimented portico with four Ionic columns at the entrance. The portico is flanked by two-story, one-bay wings. Other elements of the exterior include a Palladian window in the gable end, a fanlight in the front door, and a balustraded porch on the east side.

Interior features include a center hall, two parlors, a dining room, and a kitchen. The center hall is framed by a double-flight staircase with a mahogany handrail. The parlors have original marble mantels and wide plank flooring. The dining room features a built-in cupboard, and the kitchen features a beehive oven.

Stanton House is an important example of Federal-style architecture in the Clinton area and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently owned by the Town of Clinton and is open to the public for tours and events.
