DEEP RIVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Deep River Historical Society (DRHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1985. The mission of the DRHS is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Deep River and the surrounding area. The Society works to educate the public about the rich historical heritage of the town and to promote an appreciation of the past.

The Society operates out of the Deep River Historical Museum, which is located in the former Deep River Elementary School building. The museum houses a wide range of artifacts and items related to local history. Exhibits include the town’s earliest settlers, early mills, industry, and transportation. The museum also hosts educational events and workshops.

The DRHS also operates two historic houses: the Captain John Chester House, which dates from 1720, and the Thomas Lee House, which dates from 1876. Both houses are open for visitors and are available for private events and rentals.

The DRHS also has an active research library and archive. The library contains a variety of materials related to local history, including manuscripts, photographs, maps, and newspaper clippings. Researchers are welcome to use the library during regular business hours.

The Society is active in the community, sponsoring various events and activities throughout the year. These include lectures, walking tours, and workshops. Additionally, the DRHS is a member of the Connecticut League of Historical Societies, which works to promote historical preservation throughout the state.
