The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Stamford Inc. (JHSGS) is a non-profit, educational organization founded in 1980 to preserve and promote the history of the Jewish community in Stamford, Connecticut. The organization is dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting the history, artifacts and stories of the Jewish community of Stamford, so that future generations can appreciate the contributions made to their local community.
JHSGS makes its collections available to the public through exhibitions, lectures, educational programs, as well as through its website. The organization provides materials, archival documents and photographs to researchers, educators, students and the general public. It also offers educational programs for schools and adult audiences.
The JHSGS collections are housed at the Stamford Historical Society and consist of over 2,000 photographs, documents and artifacts related to the Jewish community of Stamford, from the early 20th century up to the present. These items include documents such as marriage, birth and death certificates, military records, synagogue records, documents related to businesses, organizations, and clubs, as well as photographs, artifacts and oral histories.
JHSGS is actively engaged in the process of preserving and promoting the history of the Jewish community of Stamford. The organization also serves as a resource for research and education, and as a means of honoring and preserving the memory and legacy of the local Jewish community.
