Gaineswood is a historic house located in Demopolis, Alabama. The house was built between 1843 and 1861 by General Nathan Bryan Whitfield, a wealthy planter and the founder of the town of Demopolis. It is one of the most significant examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States.

Gaineswood is a two-story house built in the shape of a Greek cross, with a centrally located square hall surrounded by four rooms on each side. It is constructed of brick, limestone, and stucco and has a low-pitched hipped roof. The exterior features a wide two-story portico with ten Doric columns, which is supported by brick piers and limestone steps. The interior of the house is decorated with ornate plaster work, marble fireplaces, and hand-painted wallpapers.

Gaineswood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. It is now owned and operated by the Alabama Historical Commission and serves as a museum, offering tours and educational programs. It is open to the public and provides a glimpse into the past of Demopolis and the life of its founder, General Whitfield.
