Canterbury Historical Society Inc. is a non-profit organization based in Canterbury, Connecticut. Founded in 1933, the Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Canterbury and the surrounding towns. Its mission is to preserve, protect and promote the history of the area, to educate the public about the region’s history and to serve as a resource for the community.
The Society is managed by a volunteer board of directors and staffed by a paid executive director. It is supported by memberships, donations, grants and the sale of publications.
The Society offers a variety of programs and events that promote the area’s history. These include guided tours of historic sites, lectures and presentations, historic walking tours, historical re-enactments, workshops, and special events. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Canterbury Historian, featuring articles on local history and culture.
The Society’s library and archives contain thousands of documents, photographs, artifacts, and maps that relate to Canterbury’s past. These collections are open to the public for research and educational purposes. The Society also holds an annual meeting and occasional other events for members and the public.
