The Colorado Institute for Historical Study (CIHS) is an educational facility located in Denver, Colorado. It was founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated historians and educators with the goal of providing the public with a better understanding of the state’s history. CIHS is a non-profit, volunteer-run institution that serves as a resource for historical research and education.

BA53 Nuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum *The BA53 variant without fins was meant for internal carry in the bomb pod on the B-58 Hustler B53 Nuclear Bomb The Mk/B53 was a high-yield bunker buster thermonuclear weapon developed by the United States during the Cold War. Deployed on Strategic Air Command bombers, the B53, with a yield of 9 megatons, was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal after the last B41 nuclear bombs were retired in 1976. The B53 was the basis of the W-53 warhead carried by the Titan II Missile, which was decommissioned in 1987. Although not in active service for many years before 2010, fifty B53s were retained during that time as part of the "Hedge" portion of the Enduring Stockpile until its complete dismantling in 2011. The last B53 was disassembled on 25 October 2011, a year ahead of schedule. With its retirement, the largest bomb currently in service in the U.S. nuclear arsenal is the B83, with a maximum yield of 1.2 megatons. The B53 was replaced in the bunker-busting role by a variant of the two-stage B61 nuclear bomb. “Little Boy" Atomic Bomb Replica Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum “Little Boy" Atomic Bomb This is a replica of the bomb that the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped over the city of Hiroshima, Japan 75 years ago on August 6. The explosion killed about 40% of the residents. This was the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. Three days later, the US dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which resulted in the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.

The weapon was developed in 1956 by Los Alamos National Laboratory, entering service in April 1961. Total production was 2,000 weapons, ending in 1965. The B43 was built in three variants: Mod 0, Mod 1, and Mod 2, each with five yield options. Explosive yields varied from 70 kilotons of TNT to 1 megaton of TNT. The B-43 could be delivered at altitudes as low as 300 ft, with fusing options for air burst, ground burst, free fall, contact, or laydown delivery - a mode of deploying a free-fall nuclear weapon in which the bomb's fall is slowed by parachute so that it actually lands on the ground before detonating.
