Mesa Verde National Park - Cliff Palace Mesa Verde National Park is located in southwestern Colorado.  The park was created by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.

The park occupies 52,485 acres and contains more than 4,300 sites, including 600 cliff dwellings.  It is the largest archaeological preserve in the US.

Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The structure was built by the Ancestral Puebloans.  It was built between 1190 and 1260 and abandoned by 1300.

Cliff Palace contains 23 kivas (round sunken ceremonial rooms) and 150 rooms.  It had a population of approximately 100 people.
