The Black American West Museum in Denver, Colorado is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the history and culture of African American pioneers in the American West. Founded in 1971 by Dr. Justina L. Ford, the museum is the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to the significant contributions of African Americans in the West.

The museum's collection includes artifacts from the 19th century, including furniture, photographs, clothing, and other objects. The museum also houses a library with over 10,000 books, magazines, and newspaper clippings, as well as a research center.

Titan I Missile Launch Keys and Padlock Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum Titan I Missile Launch Keys and Padlock This padlock secured one of two metal boxes containing missile launch codes. Each launch controller had the combination for one lock. In the event of nuclear war, the controllers would unlock the boxes and verify the launch codes. Then these keys would have been turned simultaneously by two airmen sitting at separate consoles to launch the missiles. These keys are from one of the Lowry Titan control centers.

The Titans were kept safe in underground concrete silos and raised to the surface before launch.

The explosion killed about 40% of the residents. This was the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. Three days later, the US dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which resulted in the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.

B61 Thermonuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum B61 Thermonuclear Bomb 301 705-00 B61-7 Type 3E ALTS 0 SERIAL P758 The B61 nuclear bomb is the primary thermonuclear weapon in the U.S. Enduring Stockpile following the end of the Cold War. When the B61 was still classified, aircrew were not allowed to use the term "B61," instead they referred to the weapon as a "shape," a "silver bullet," or even simply "external delivery." Built by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, the B61 began its life as a program for a lightweight, streamlined weapon. Total production of all versions was approximately 3,155, of which approximately 1,925 remain in service, and some 1,265 are considered to be operational. Nine versions (or "Mods") of the B61 have been produced. Each shares the same nuclear components but with different yield options. The newest variant, the B61 Mod 11, deployed in 1997, is a ground-penetrating bunker buster for use against targets buried deep underground. The B61 has been deployed by a wide variety of U.S. military aircraft over the years. Most recently the F-15 Eagle, F-15E Strike Eagle, and F-22 Raptor have been designated as B61 delivery platforms. British, German, and Italian Panavia Tornadoes plus Belgian and Dutch F-16 Fighting Falcons can also carry the B61. The B61 is a variable yield bomb designed for carriage by high-speed aircraft. It has a streamlined casing capable of withstanding supersonic flight speeds. Most versions of the B61 are equipped with a parachute retarder the weapon in its descent, giving the aircraft a chance to escape the blast (or to allow the weapon to survive impact with the ground). The weapon was developed in 1956 by Los Alamos National Laboratory, entering service in April 1961. Total production was 2,000 weapons, ending in 1965. The B43 was built in three variants: Mod 0, Mod 1, and Mod 2, each with five yield options. Explosive yields varied from 70 kilotons of TNT to 1 megaton of TNT. The B-43 could be delivered at altitudes as low as 300 ft, with fusing options for air burst, ground burst, free fall, contact, or laydown delivery - a mode of deploying a free-fall nuclear weapon in which the bomb's fall is slowed by parachute so that it actually lands on the ground before detonating.
