The McElmo Canyon Research Institute (MCRI) is a non-profit research facility located in Cortez, Colorado. The Institute was founded by Dr. Richard Snyder and Dr. James Coombs in 2009, who had a shared interest in understanding the ecology of McElmo Canyon and the surrounding areas. MCRI focuses on exploring, understanding, and conserving the unique and diverse ecology of the region.

The Institute's research work includes field studies, educational programs, and outreach initiatives to increase understanding of the natural history and ecology of the region. In addition to research, MCRI also provides a variety of educational opportunities for students and the public, including field trips, lectures, workshops and seminars.

The Institute has a strong commitment to conservation and works with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private organizations, to protect and preserve the unique environment of McElmo Canyon and the surrounding area. MCRI is a key partner in the San Juan County Land and Water Conservation Coalition, which works to protect and restore the region's cultural and natural resources.

The Institute is located on the edge of the McElmo Canyon, just outside of Cortez. It is easily accessible from the town, and is situated on 20 acres of land, which includes a small research station and several trails that are open to the public.

The Institute is open year-round and provides a variety of research and educational opportunities for both the public and scientists. MCRI is an important resource for understanding and protecting the unique ecology of McElmo Canyon and the surrounding areas.
