The Historic Montclair Community Association Inc. (HMCA) is a non-profit organization based in Denver, Colorado, dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic residential character of the Montclair neighborhood. Founded in 1968, it consists of a volunteer board of directors, a membership of residents, and a paid staff. The HMCA is dedicated to preserving the historic character of the neighborhood, protecting its residential quality and encouraging community involvement.

The HMCA works in partnership with the city of Denver’s Historic Preservation Office to protect the historic structures in the Montclair neighborhood. The HMCA also serves as a liaison between the neighborhood and local government, and works to ensure that the neighborhood is a safe and desirable place to live.

The HMCA sponsors several community events throughout the year, such as the Historic Montclair Home and Garden Tour, the Montclair Street Fair, and the Montclair Garden Walk. The organization also supports several neighborhood organizations and initiatives, including the Montclair Library, the Montclair Business District, and the Montclair Community Garden.

In addition to its work in the neighborhood, the HMCA also works to preserve the Montclair neighborhood’s history by collecting oral histories from its residents and creating a permanent record of the neighborhood’s past. The HMCA also sponsors a number of educational programs for adults and children, such as lectures and walking tours of the neighborhood.

The explosion killed about 40% of the residents. This was the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. Three days later, the US dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which resulted in the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.

B28FI Nuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum Mk28/B28FI Hydrogen Bomb The Mk28 hydrogen bomb, although first produced in 1958, remained an active item until 1991. It was designed to be carried by various fighter and bomber aircraft (F-100, F-104, F-105, B-47 B-52, and B-66). This weapon is capable of a ground or air burst and may be carried internally or externally, with a free-fall or parachute retarded drop, depending upon its configuration. The W28 small diameter, light weight thermonuclear warhead in M28 became the most versatile and widely used design ever adopted by the United States. This tactical and strategic thermonuclear bomb had the longest US service duration (33 years) and 2nd largest production run of any U.S. weapon design with over 4500 produced. The Mk-28 employed the "Building Block" principle, permitting various combinations of components to be combined: B28EX- Carried externally by F-100, F-105, and F-4; no parachute B28RE- Carried externally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute and one 28 ft. ribbon chute. B28IN- Carried internally by B-52 and F-105; no parachute. B28RI- Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot parachute, one 16.5-ft. ribbon extraction chute, one 64-ft. solid chute, and one 30-in. stabilization chute. B28FI- Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute, one 16-ft. and one 24-ft. chute. On 17 January 1966, during a mid-air refueling operation, a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber collided with a KC-135 tanker over the coast of southern Spain near the village of Palomares. Both aircraft were destroyed and 7 of the 11 crew members onboard perished. The B-52 carried four B28 nuclear weapons. Parachutes deployed for two weapons. One bomb was recovered intact from a dry river bed east of Palomares and the other was recovered intact from the Mediterranean seabed 5 miles offshore 80 days later. Parachutes failed to deploy for two weapons which underwent high explosive detonation. One landed less than a mile west of the village and the other landed at the eastern edge. This resulted in various amounts of radioactive contamination over 558 acres.
