The Mt. Sopris Historical Society (MSHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the Roaring Fork Valley and Carbondale, Colorado. Located in the heart of Carbondale, the MSHS works to preserve the legacy of the area’s mining and ranching past, and to educate the public about the history of the region.

The MSHS was founded in 1975 and is funded through grants and donations from the public. It is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by a professional staff and volunteers. Its mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and promote the history of the Roaring Fork Valley and the town of Carbondale so that the community can gain greater understanding and appreciation for the area’s past.

The MSHS offers a variety of educational programs and activities, including museum exhibitions, lectures, tours, hands-on activities and workshops. It also offers a variety of research materials, including books, photographs, maps and artifacts.

The MSHS is housed in an historic building in downtown Carbondale. It is home to the Roaring Fork Valley Museum, which contains a permanent collection of artifacts, photographs and documents documenting the history of the area. The MSHS also operates the Carbondale Historical Park, which includes a collection of historic buildings and structures, such as the former Carbondale Jail, the historic Carbondale Schoolhouse and the historic St. Mary’s Church.

The MSHS is a member of the Colorado Historical Society and the American Association for State and Local History. It is also a part of the Carbondale Historical Preservation Commission and the Carbondale Historic Preservation Board. The MSHS is open to the public on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
