The Erie Historical Society is a non-profit organization in Erie County, Pennsylvania, dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the region. Founded in 1969, the Society’s mission is to “collect, preserve, interpret, and share the heritage of Erie County and the region for present and future generations.” The Society has a diverse collection of archives, artifacts, photographs, maps, and other items related to Erie County’s history.
The Society’s headquarters are located in the historic Watson-Curtze Mansion in downtown Erie. The Society’s permanent exhibits include the Erie County Historical Museum, which features displays on the region’s early settlement, industry, and transportation, as well as a genealogy room. The Watson-Curtze Mansion also houses the Society’s research library, which contains books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, and other items related to the local history.
The Society also offers educational programs, including lectures, workshops, and tours. Many of these programs are designed to help individuals learn more about their family and community history. The Society also hosts special events throughout the year, including a popular annual History Day celebration.
In addition, the Society operates the Erie County Historical Society Press, which publishes books, articles, and other materials related to the history of Erie County. The Society also maintains a website, which features information about the Society’s programs, activities, and exhibits, as well as historical information about the region.
