Deployed on Strategic Air Command bombers, the B53, with a yield of 9 megatons, was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal after the last B41 nuclear bombs were retired in 1976. The B53 was the basis of the W-53 warhead carried by the Titan II Missile, which was decommissioned in 1987. Although not in active service for many years before 2010, fifty B53s were retained during that time as part of the "Hedge" portion of the Enduring Stockpile until its complete dismantling in 2011. The explosion killed about 40% of the residents. This was the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. Three days later, the US dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which resulted in the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.

B53 Nuclear Bomb Loading Dummy (Type BDU-9/E) Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum The B53 was a high-yield bunker buster thermonuclear weapon deployed on Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers by the United States during the Cold War. With a yield of nine (9) megatons, the B53 was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal circa 1976. The B53 Bomb Dummy Unit (BDU) was used to train bomb technicians on how to upload and download the B53 on to and down from the carrier aircraft. The bomb technicians also can monitor the signal from the aircraft to the bomb once it is uploaded thus verifying connection with the aircraft. B61 Thermonuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum B61 Thermonuclear Bomb 301 705-00 B61-7 Type 3E ALTS 0 SERIAL P758 The B61 nuclear bomb is the primary thermonuclear weapon in the U.S. Enduring Stockpile following the end of the Cold War. When the B61 was still classified, aircrew were not allowed to use the term "B61," instead they referred to the weapon as a "shape," a "silver bullet," or even simply "external delivery." Built by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, the B61 began its life as a program for a lightweight, streamlined weapon. Total production of all versions was approximately 3,155, of which approximately 1,925 remain in service, and some 1,265 are considered to be operational. Nine versions (or "Mods") of the B61 have been produced. Each shares the same nuclear components but with different yield options. The newest variant, the B61 Mod 11, deployed in 1997, is a ground-penetrating bunker buster for use against targets buried deep underground. The B61 has been deployed by a wide variety of U.S. military aircraft over the years. Most recently the F-15 Eagle, F-15E Strike Eagle, and F-22 Raptor have been designated as B61 delivery platforms. British, German, and Italian Panavia Tornadoes plus Belgian and Dutch F-16 Fighting Falcons can also carry the B61. The B61 is a variable yield bomb designed for carriage by high-speed aircraft. It has a streamlined casing capable of withstanding supersonic flight speeds. Most versions of the B61 are equipped with a parachute retarder the weapon in its descent, giving the aircraft a chance to escape the blast (or to allow the weapon to survive impact with the ground). The B61 can be set for airburst, ground burst, laydown detonation, and can be released at speeds up to Mach 2 and altitudes as low as 50 feet. The U.S. is refurbishing the B61 bombs under its Life Extension Program with the intention that the weapons should remain operational until at least 2025. The weapon was developed in 1956 by Los Alamos National Laboratory, entering service in April 1961. Total production was 2,000 weapons, ending in 1965. The B43 was built in three variants: Mod 0, Mod 1, and Mod 2, each with five yield options. Explosive yields varied from 70 kilotons of TNT to 1 megaton of TNT. The B-43 could be delivered at altitudes as low as 300 ft, with fusing options for air burst, ground burst, free fall, contact, or laydown delivery - a mode of deploying a free-fall nuclear weapon in which the bomb's fall is slowed by parachute so that it actually lands on the ground before detonating. Aircraft that could carry the weapon included most USAF, USN and USMC fighters, bombers and attack aircraft, including the A-3 Skywarrior, A-4 Skyhawk, A-5 Vigilante, A-6 Intruder, A-7 Corsair II, B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Stratofortress, F-100 Super Saber, F-105 Thunderchief, F-4 Phantom Il, F-111 Aardvark, FB-111A, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the F/A-18 Hornet.
