Park County Local History in Fairplay CO dates back to the mid-1800s when gold miners and prospectors came to the area seeking their fortune. The town of Fairplay was established in 1859, and quickly became a hub of activity. The population of Park County rose from just a few hundred in 1860 to over 3,000 by the end of the decade.

The local economy was supported by mining, ranching, and tourism. The railroad also played a major role in the growth of Park County. The Denver, South Park & Pacific line arrived in 1879 and linked Fairplay to the rest of Colorado. The town blossomed into a hub of business and commerce.

The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was built in the early 1900s, connecting Park County to the rest of the state. In the 1920s, the ski industry began to take off, and the town of Fairplay became a popular destination for winter recreation.

Today, Park County is still a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the area’s history and enjoy the nearby mountains, rivers, and lakes. Fairplay is home to the South Park City Museum, which showcases the area’s past. Park County also boasts a number of historic sites, including old mining camps, cabins, and old stagecoach roads.
