The Victor Historical Preservation Society (VHPS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic sites and artifacts in Thornton County, Colorado. Founded in 1998, the Society is dedicated to the discovery, restoration, and preservation of local history, and the protection of historic sites.

The VHPS is composed of local volunteers who are passionate about preserving the rich history of the area. The Society works to identify and document the historical significance of sites in Thornton County, and to preserve these sites for future generations. They work with various government agencies to obtain permits and grants to help with the preservation of these sites.

The VHPS organizes events, lectures, and tours to bring awareness to the history of the area and to promote the preservation of historic sites in Thornton County. The Society also works to educate the public about the importance of historic preservation.

The VHPS also works to restore and preserve artifacts found in the region. The artifacts are displayed in the Society's museum located in Thornton County. The museum is open to the public and provides visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the history of Thornton County.

The Victor Historical Preservation Society continues to work to preserve the historic sites and artifacts of Thornton County and to provide an educational resource to the public.

Lowry: The First Titan Missile Base Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum To prevent nuclear war, our enemies had to understand that if they struck first, enough of our missiles would survive to destroy their country. The Titans were kept safe in underground concrete silos and raised to the surface before launch.
B28RE Nuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum Mk28/B28RE Hydrogen Bomb The Mk28 hydrogen bomb, although first produced in 1958, remained an active item until 1991. It was designed to be carried by various fighter and bomber aircraft (F-100, F-104, F-105, B-47, B-52, and B-66). This weapon is capable of a ground or air burst and may be carried internally or externally, with a free-fall or parachute retarded drop, depending upon its configuration. The W28 small diameter, light weight thermonuclear warhead in Mk28 became the most versatile and widely used design ever adopted by the United States. This tactical and strategic thermonuclear bomb had the longest US service duration (33 years) and 2nd largest production run of any U.S. weapon design with over 4500 produced. The last weapons were retired from the U.S. arsenal in 1991. The Mk-28 employed the "Building Block" principle, permitting various combinations of components to be combined: B28EX -Carried externally by F-100, F-105, and F-4; no parachute. B28RE - Carried externally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute and one 28 ft. ribbon chute. B28IN - Carried internally by B-52 and F-105; no parachute. B28RI - Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot parachute, one 16.5-ft. ribbon extraction chute, one 64-ft. solid chute, and one 30-in. stabilization chute. B28FI - Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute, one 16-ft. and one 24-ft. chute. This Mk28RE was used at Lowry to teach students how to load and unload the weapon on different types of aircraft. It is displayed underneath the F-100 Super Sabre, one of the primary aircraft used as a delivery system. B43 Nuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum For more than twenty years the B43 was the United States' air-dropped nuclear weapon used by a wide variety of aircraft. The weapon was developed in 1956 by Los Alamos National Laboratory, entering service in April 1961. Total production was 2,000 weapons, ending in 1965. The B43 was built in three variants: Mod 0, Mod 1, and Mod 2, each with five yield options. Explosive yields varied from 70 kilotons of TNT to 1 megaton of TNT. The B-43 could be delivered at altitudes as low as 300 ft, with fusing options for air burst, ground burst, free fall, contact, or laydown delivery - a mode of deploying a free-fall nuclear weapon in which the bomb's fall is slowed by parachute so that it actually lands on the ground before detonating. Aircraft that could carry the weapon included most USAF, USN and USMC fighters, bombers and attack aircraft, including the A-3 Skywarrior, A-4 Skyhawk, A-5 Vigilante, A-6 Intruder, A-7 Corsair II, B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Stratofortress, F-100 Super Saber, F-105 Thunderchief, F-4 Phantom Il, F-111 Aardvark, FB-111A, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the F/A-18 Hornet. The B-1B Lancer was also intended to carry the B43 prior to the B-1's reassignment to conventional strike roles. The B43 was also supplied to Great Britain. The B43 was never used in anger, but it was involved in a nuclear accident when an A-4 Skyhawk of the USS Ticonderoga from Attack Squadron VA-56 was lost off the coast of Japan on 5 December 1965. The aircraft, the pilot, and the bomb were never found. The B43 was phased out in the 1980s, and the last B43 weapons were retired in 1991 in favor of the newer B61 and B83 weapons. The upper weapon was used by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to practice their skills on, while the lower weapon was used by aircraft ground crews to practice loading the weapon on various aircraft. The "spike" on the end of the weapon buried itself in the ground and kept the unit from being dragged by its parachute when the target was small and needed precision accuracy.
