GUNNISON VALLEY OBSERVATORY

The Gunnison Valley Observatory, located in Gunnison County, Colorado, is an astronomical observatory operated by Western Colorado University for public, educational, and research use. The observatory is located at an elevation of 8,000 feet, providing an ideal location for clear views of the night sky.

The observatory is equipped with a 14-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and an 8-inch Meade LX200 telescope. The facility also has a plethora of accessories including a CCD camera and a variety of eyepieces and filters. An attached classroom provides space for lectures, presentations, and other educational activities.

The observatory is open to the public on select nights throughout the year. During these nights, visitors can take advantage of the telescopes and other astronomical equipment to observe the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. Astronomy classes, lectures, and other special events are also available.

In addition to providing the public with access to the night sky, the Gunnison Valley Observatory also serves an important role in research. Astronomers from Western Colorado University use the facility to study topics such as exoplanets, supernovae, and other astronomical phenomena. The observatory also participates in the International Astronomical Search Collaboration, which is an international program designed to help amateur astronomers find and study asteroids and comets.
