This padlock secured one of two metal boxes containing missile launch codes. Each launch controller had the combination for one lock. In the event of nuclear war, the controllers would unlock the boxes and verify the launch codes. Then these keys would have been turned simultaneously by two airmen sitting at separate consoles to launch the missiles. These keys are from one of the Lowry Titan control centers.

B53 Nuclear Bomb
The Mk/B53 was a high-yield bunker buster thermonuclear weapon developed by the United States during the Cold War. Deployed on Strategic Air Command bombers, the B53, with a yield of 9 megatons, was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal after the last B41 nuclear bombs were retired in 1976.

The B53 was the basis of the W-53 warhead carried by the Titan II Missile, which was decommissioned in 1987. Although not in active service for many years before 2010, fifty B53s were retained during that time as part of the &quot;Hedge&quot; portion of the Enduring Stockpile until its complete dismantling in 2011. The last B53 was disassembled on 25 October 2011, a year ahead of schedule.

With its retirement, the largest bomb currently in service in the U.S. nuclear arsenal is the B83, with a maximum yield of 1.2 megatons. The B53 was replaced in the bunker-busting role by a variant of the two-stage B61 nuclear bomb.

Hydrogen Bomb

The Mk28 hydrogen bomb, although first produced in 1958, remained an active item until 1991. It was designed to be carried by various fighter and bomber aircraft (F-100, F-104, F-105, B-47 B-52, and B-66). This weapon is capable of a ground or air burst and may be carried internally or externally, with a free-fall or parachute retarded drop, depending upon its configuration.

The W28 small diameter, light weight thermonuclear warhead in M28 became the most versatile and widely used design ever adopted by the United States. This tactical and strategic thermonuclear bomb had the longest US service duration (33 years) and 2nd largest production run of any U.S. weapon design with over 4500 produced.

The Mk-28 employed the &quot;Building Block&quot; principle, permitting various combinations of components to be combined:

B28EX- Carried externally by F-100, F-105, and F-4; no parachute
B28RE- Carried externally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute and one 28 ft. ribbon chute.
B28IN- Carried internally by B-52 and F-105; no parachute.
B28RI- Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot parachute, one 16.5-ft. ribbon extraction chute, one 64-ft. solid chute, and one 30-in. stabilization chute.
B28FI- Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute, one 16-ft. and one 24-ft. chute.

On 17 January 1966, during a mid-air refueling operation, a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber collided with a KC-135 tanker over the coast of southern Spain near the village of Palomares. Both aircraft were destroyed and 7 of the 11 crew members onboard perished. The B-52 carried four B28 nuclear weapons. Parachutes deployed for two weapons. One bomb was recovered intact from a dry river bed east of Palomares and the other was recovered intact from the Mediterranean seabed 5 miles offshore 80 days later. Parachutes failed to deploy for two weapons which underwent high explosive detonation. One landed less than a mile west of the village and the other landed at the eastern edge. This resulted in various amounts of radioactive contamination over 558 acres.
