The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, was established in 1966 to study the diverse cultures of the American Southwest. It is a research center with a mission to promote a greater understanding of the cultures, history, and environment of the region. The Center’s library houses a collection of more than 15,000 books and journals on topics related to the American Southwest. It also contains an extensive archival collection of documents, photographs, audio recordings, and other materials related to the region.
The Center sponsors a variety of lectures, seminars, and other events to promote scholarly research and public education about the region’s history and cultures. It also offers courses in Native American studies and Southwest history, as well as a certificate program and a minor in Southwest Studies. In addition, the Center organizes field trips, workshops, and symposia, and publishes several scholarly journals.
The Center also houses a museum, which displays artifacts and art from the region’s numerous indigenous cultures. The museum’s collection includes pottery, basketry, jewelry, and other artifacts from the Ancestral Puebloans, Navajo, Hopi, Apache, and other cultures. The museum also features interactive exhibits, such as a replica of a Pueblo village, and educational programs for school groups.
