Located in Delta County, Colorado, Fort Uncompahgre was built by the U.S. Army in response to the Ute Indian War of 1879. The fort was named after the Uncompahgre Ute tribe, one of the five tribes of the Ute Nation. The fort was established in 1880 on the banks of the Uncompahgre River and served as a military post until 1883, when it was abandoned.

The fort was rectangular in shape and consisted of two rows of buildings, including a barracks, a hospital, and a guardhouse, all made from adobe. At its peak, the fort housed about 80 soldiers, who were tasked with protecting settlers in the area from Ute raiders. The fort also acted as a trading post, allowing local farmers and ranchers to trade goods with the Ute people.

The fort was abandoned in 1883, but the buildings remained standing until the 1950s. In 1960, the fort was reconstructed and opened to the public as a historical site. Visitors to the fort can explore the reconstructed buildings, including the barracks, a trading post, and an old blacksmith shop. There is also a museum on-site, which features exhibits on the history of the Ute people, the fort, and the surrounding area.
