B53 Nuclear Bomb Loading Dummy (Type BDU-9/E) Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum

The B53 was a high-yield bunker buster thermonuclear weapon deployed on Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers by the United States during the Cold War. With a yield of nine (9) megatons, the B53 was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal circa 1976.

The B53 Bomb Dummy Unit (BDU) was used to train bomb technicians on how to upload and download the B53 on to and down from the carrier aircraft. The bomb technicians also can monitor the signal from the aircraft to the bomb once it is uploaded thus verifying connection with the aircraft.

Collections research for museums in Denver, Colorado is an important part of preserving and understanding the history of the city. It involves conducting research on museum objects and artifacts to better understand their origin and meaning. It is also used to help identify objects that are important to the city’s history and should be included in the museum’s collection.

The research is done through a variety of sources including archives, libraries, interviews, and field research. Archival research is used to uncover evidence of past events and the stories behind the items. Library research is used to find books and other materials related to the items in the collection. Interviews are conducted with people who have knowledge of the objects, and field research is used to investigate the objects in their original context.

The research also includes examining the object’s material composition, condition, and provenance. This helps to identify its origin and how it has changed over time. It also helps to determine whether the object is authentic and if it is significant to the history of the city.

Once the research is complete, it is compiled into a report that is shared with the museum’s staff and board of directors.
