B53 Nuclear Bomb Loading Dummy (Type BDU-9/E) Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum

The B53 was a high-yield bunker buster thermonuclear weapon deployed on Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers by the United States during the Cold War. With a yield of nine (9) megatons, the B53 was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal circa 1976.

The B53 Bomb Dummy Unit (BDU) was used to train bomb technicians on how to upload and download the B53 on to and down from the carrier aircraft. The bomb technicians also can monitor the signal from the aircraft to the bomb once it is uploaded thus verifying connection with the aircraft.
