[Site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965, when police attacked Civil Rights demonstrators with horses, billy clubs, and tear gas as they were attempting to march to the state capital, Montgomery. The marchers crossed the bridge again on March 21 and walked to the Capitol in Montgomery. Edmund Pettus, enthusiastic champion of the Confederate cause and of slavery, was a participant at the secession convention in 1861; later organized the 20th Alabama Infantry and participated in the Stones River, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Carolinas campaigns. Resumed his law practice in Selma after the Civil War and led the state Democratic Party and participated in the Ku Klux Klan, becoming the Grand Dragon in 1877.
