The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is located in Los Angeles, California and is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Founded in 1985, it is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

The museum’s mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Through exhibitions, public programs, and educational resources, JANM provides a unique window into the Japanese American heritage.

The museum is housed in the historic former Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, built in 1925. Its permanent exhibition, Common Ground: The Heart of Community, explores the Japanese American experience, including the history of Japanese immigration, the Japanese American World War II incarceration, and the postwar resettlement.

The museum also hosts a variety of changing exhibitions, including art and photography, films, and cultural and historical artifacts from Japan and the United States. The museum offers public programs, lectures, and workshops, as well as a variety of educational resources for students and teachers.

JANM is a vibrant part of the Los Angeles cultural landscape and a place for visitors to explore the history and culture of Japanese Americans.
