The United States District Court for the Eastern District of California in Sacramento, California is one of the 94 federal judicial districts in the country. It was first established in 1855 and is the oldest federal court in California. The court is headquartered in the Edward J. Schwartz U.S. Courthouse in Sacramento. The jurisdiction of the court covers 39 of the state’s 58 counties which include all or portions of the Sierra Nevada and Sacramento Valley.

The court handles civil and criminal cases arising from federal law. The court also hears cases involving bankruptcy, admiralty, civil rights, and intellectual property. Additionally, the court has concurrent jurisdiction over some cases that fall under state law.

The court is served by seven authorized judges who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. The court also houses several magistrate judges who are appointed by the court’s judges.

The court’s clerk’s office is responsible for the administrative duties of the court, including filing and maintaining court documents, issuing summonses and maintaining records of court proceedings. The clerk’s office also provides copies of court documents and assists with jury selection.
