Juncus torreyi - torrey rush Juncus torreyi or torrey rush is prone to infection in reproductive tissues. The flowers of torrey rush are normally 3-4 mm long and densely congested into spherical heads, often 25-100 flowers per head and the heads up to 1.5 cm in diameter. Infected flowers are much fewer to a head (e.g., 2-9 flowers per head) and the the flowers measure about 2-3 cm long. The nature of this infection is yet unknown. This specimen is housed at the Montana State University Herbarium, Bozeman (MONT), where the photo was taken.

Juncus torreyi is a native rhizomatous perennial rush common to open wet sites at low to middle elevations in Montana.

I am posting photos of these infected flowering heads because I often receive photos, sometimes specimens, of these specimens from individuals wondering what kind of graminoid produces such flowering heads.
