NORTH WOOD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

MARSHFIELD, WI

Ground Blizzard It was already quite cold in central Wisconsin when a winter wind came and began to stir up the snow that was already on the ground. That’s how ground blizzards get their name. The sky can be perfectly blue overhead with no new snow falling, just as it was here, yet visibility can be very shallow. If the wind velocity is high enough, serious blowing and drifting of snow can occur, creating dangerously unsafe travel conditions. This archive photo was made on the farm where my wife grew up, taken in the closing days of the year 2008.
