TWENTY MULE TEAM MUSEUM, BORAX MUSEUM

BORON, CA

Bell X-2 Starbuster Air Force Flight Test Museum

It sat low to the ground, wings swept back, painted white and bullet shaped, waiting for those few who would challenge the unknown edge of space. It was built of an alloy known as K-Monel which proved to be highly resistant to the aerodynamic heat generated by an aircraft that was going to be rapidly baked by friction at speeds that could exceed 2000mph in minutes. It would be pushed to these unexplored places by a sometimes quirky rocket engine, the Curtiss-Wright XLR-25, a twin blowtorch that could be controlled with a throttle unlike its supersonic predecessors the Bell X-1 and the Douglas D558-II. It would take its pilots higher and faster than anything before and they would earn every foot on the altimeter and every click on the Mach meter. As it would fly the aircraft to that edge, backed up by simulations that told of uncontrolled rolls leading to something approached its target speed of Mach 3, its stability would begin to erode and warnings were given to those who terrifying called "inertia coupling", basically tumbling end over end, spinning and rolling all at once....

It was a truly beautiful, sometimes dangerous aircraft and they gave her the name... STARBUSTER
