Bur-reed (Sparganium) seed head The spiky seed head of American bur-reed (scientific name Sparganium americanum), or a similar Sparganium species.
A perennial emergent aquatic/wetland plant, native to the United States and Canada. In the Poales order and the Typhaceae (cattail) family. Often growing in the same type of habitat as the true cattails (Typha genus). The long grass-like or strap-like emergent upright leaves appear similar to the Typha cattails from a distance, though the flowers/fruits are quite different, and the leaf cross section is different. Sparganiums are closely related to the Typha cattails.

Sparganium (bur-reed) leaf cross section The triangular cross section of a Sparganium (bur-reed) leaf. This is probably American bur-reed (Sparganium americanum), though it could be another similar Sparganium species.

Sparganium is in the Typhaceae family and bur-reeds are closely related to the Typha, the true cattails. They grow in similar marsh and shallow water habitat, and both have long grass-like or strap-like upright leaves. Their flowers and fruit are quite different, however. Leaf cross section shape is also different. As seen here, bur-reed has a triangular shape with a prominent center ridge. In contrast, true cattails (Typha) have a half-circle or crescent-shaped cross section without the sharp center ridge.

Growing along the shore of the East Branch of the Milwaukee River, just below the Long Lake outlet dam in Dundee in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
