Pleasants Power Station, Belmont, WV Built in 1977-1980, this coal-fired power station, known as the Pleasants Power Station, stands along the Banks of the Ohio River just downstream of Belmont, West Virginia. The power station was the site of the Willow Island Disaster in 1978, when one of the concrete cooling towers collapsed during construction due to improper quality control of the concrete and a rushed schedule, leading to the deaths of all 51 workers on the scaffolding actively working on building the tower, who were crushed by falling chunks of concrete and metal scaffolding. The Willow Island Disaster is the deadliest single construction accident in the history of the United States. After the disaster, the power plant construction eventually was resumed, and the power station began operations in 1980. It is scheduled to shut down operations on June 1, 2023.

Clouds Aren't Friends After hours chasing and waiting trackside throughout the day, the last shot of the day on the BIP I wanted was of the train coming down the steep bridge into the Parkersburg High Yard. The way the bridge comes down while the road angles downwards the opposite way makes for a dramatic effect! But of course, right as the train rounded the bend on the bridge, a single, small cloud eclipsed the sun. And followed the train all the way until the first few cars had passed me. Clouds are not my friend, man. Second time of the day, and on the last shot, too! Not the end of the world by any means but still less than ideal to say the least... But it just gives me more reasons to return to the Belpre Industrial Parkersburg Railroad, if I didn't need more already. A very neat shortline to shoot that I will absolutely come back for!
Cleaning Up The Act BIP578s southbound train has re-entered the sort of rattier section of the BIP once again on its way back to Parkersburg. Along the Ohio River, their tracks are in pretty good shape and they can get some decent speeds, but large chunks of track between Rainbow and Waterford are in fairly rough shape. Things have certainly improved on much of it since the BIP came online a few years ago, but there's clearly much work to go seeing as our train has slowed to little more than a crawl. One crossing along Muskingum River Road seems to be the most well known, and there have been some clear improvements since some of the most popular photos of the spot from when the shortline was brand new, though it's only half of the picture. Just beyond the crossing and behind me, the roadbed has shifted in every which direction on seemingly unstable ground. Bumpy is putting it lightly, things don't look great back there. The dramatic shifts from heavy industrial area to almost midwest-esque scenery to the seemingly crumbling trackwork in the shadows of the trees is what drew me to the Belpre-Industrial Parkersburg. There's really a little something for everybody on this little railroad.
