The Bakersfield Youth Symphony (BYS) is an organization committed to providing musical education and performance opportunities for young musicians in Kern County, California. Founded in 1998, BYS strives to promote musical excellence, develop teamwork, and provide students with a positive, meaningful experience through the study and performance of orchestral music.

At BYS, students have the opportunity to learn and grow their musical abilities in a relaxed and nurturing environment. Through weekly rehearsals, students learn to work together to create beautiful music. The program also offers performance opportunities, giving students the chance to showcase their talents in concerts, competitions, and festivals.

BYS serves students of all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced players. The orchestra program is divided into three divisions: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each division has its own distinct repertoire and performance goals.

The Bakersfield Youth Symphony is open to all students in the greater Bakersfield area and is dedicated to developing their musical skills and providing quality performance opportunities. With the help of dedicated staff and parent volunteers, BYS strives to provide the highest level of musical instruction and performance to young musicians in Kern County.

Oildale (Bakersfield) Standard School Auditorium (# 2439) I almost missed this building. I was headed out of Bakersfield, going through the Oildale area which is mainly older single-story businesses and residences, when I happened to notice this building that was quite elegant for the area. Turning around and coming back, not only was I amazed by the architecture, but also what seemed to be an odd name: “Standard School Auditorium.” It was very hard to find information on this, particularly since I’m in the city of Bakersfield and used that in searching. The auditorium was built in 1937 with Public Works Administration funds and is still in use. Oildale was once a separate unincorporated area just north of Bakersfield, and apparently the school district is named Standard School District because Standard Oil donated the land for the first school of the district. Oildale (Bakersfield) Standard School Auditorium gargoyle? (# 2440) A little more detail of the figures on the top of the building (see adjacent picture). They’re not quite gargoyles, but I couldn’t think of a better word since they look rather frightening. If you zoom in, you can see that they seem to have their hands on globes.
KCM / honoring (belatedly) Native populations (# 2435) Oh, we forgot.... there were people living here before the European settlers. <u><a href="https://kernarts.org/event/kern-county-museum-dedicates-owtsan-house/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Owtsan House</a></u> was dedicated this year (2023) to honor the history of the Native populations that lived in the area for thousands of years before the occupation by Mexicans and then Americans. <i>Use the Kern County Museum (KCM) tag to see all of the photographs from the museum.</i>
KCM / historic clock tower (# 2436) At the entrance to the museum, a reconstruction of an historic <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=170346" rel="noreferrer nofollow">clock tower</a></u> that stood in downtown Bakersfield. The original clock tower, dedicated in 1904, was extensively damaged by the 1952 Kern County earthquake and aftershocks. This replica includes the original clock work, bell, iron stairway, railings and grill work. The 1952 <u><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Kern_County_earthquake" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Kern County earthquake</a></u> which destroyed the tower, measured 7.3 and had many large (5+ on the scale) aftershocks that severely damaged Tehachapi, downtown Bakersfield, and multiple other small towns. <i>Use the Kern County Museum (KCM) tag to see all of the photographs from the museum.</i>

KCM / 1936 gas station (# 2419) <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=25187" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Gas station</a></u>, built in 1936 at 18th and Sonora in Bakersfield when gas was $.15 a gallon ($3.31 in current dollars) and an attendant filled your tank (and probably washed your windshield). <i>Use the Kern County Museum (KCM) tag to see all of the photographs from the museum.</i>
KCM / Hotel Fellows (# 2416) The <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=25992" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Hotel Fellows</a></u>, built in 1910 in the town of Fellows in western Kern County, for oil field workers and their families. KCM / historic drilling rig (# 2405) Seen from the section of the park that focuses on houses and small businesses, in the distance a replica of a wooden drilling rig of the sort that would have been used at the turn of the last century. The replica was made by volunteers of retired oil-field workers, with the assistance of oil industry companies. KCM / SP rail construction necessity – jail (# 2401) The <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=25606" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Southern Pacific Railroad Jail</a></u>! Something I had never thought about, but makes perfect sense. Building a railroad in the late 1800’s through the mountains was a tough and dangerous job, attracting lots of men (mostly) who might not be consistently law-abiding. Since the railroad is being built out in the wilderness, you need some way to keep miscreants until you can get them to the county seat.
