The Mon Valley Railroad Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Morgantown, West Virginia. Founded in 1983, the society is dedicated to preserving the history of railroads in the Monongahela Valley region of West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

October 18, 2021: Personal Rapid Transit, Morgantown, West Virginia A northbound car passes along the elevated track of the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system between Beechurst and Engineering Stations in Morgantown, West Virginia, as seen from the window of a southbound car on a quiet afternoon. With space for only a few people at a time, these pod-like vehicles traverse an 8.7-mile, five-stop right-of-way that links downtown Morgantown with the outlying Evansdale Campus of West Virginia University. After entering the station and paying the fare (50¢ per trip), PRT commuters press a button corresponding to their destination, and the completely computerized and automated system whisks them there directly without needing to stop at any of the intervening stations along the way. Transit wonks of today generally see it as a retro novelty, but in its day, the PRT was state-of-the-art and widely considered prototypical of the future of public transportation, especially by the U.S. federal government, which by the late 1960s had become keen on the concept as a less expensive alternative to existing subway and light rail systems. In the meantime, Morgantown was experiencing the same growing pains as other college towns across the country - matriculation rates were growing explosively due to a confluence of factors, notably the coming of age of the postwar Baby Boom generation, a sharp increase in federal aid programs for postsecondary students, and the transition of the economy away from manufacturing toward professional positions of the type more likely to require a degree - with the added factor of the city's geography, where outward expansion was rendered physically impossible due to its location in a narrow river valley surrounded by mountains. The constant choking of the local streets with traffic was beginning to cause problems for the shuttle buses that were tasked with ferrying WVU's students between the school's two campuses located on opposite sides of town. Hence, with the help of the influential senator Robert Byrd, professor Samy Elias of WVU's Industrial Engineering Department was successfully able to persuade the U.S. Department of Transportation to use Morgantown as an experimental site for PRT development, and to get a suite of major corporations and entities such as Boeing and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory involved in its development. The system became operational in 1975, and was expanded to its present length four years later with the addition of the Towers and Medical (now Health Sciences) stations. Despite the initial hype, Morgantown's was one of only two PRT systems ever built in the United States, and is today the only one that remains in operation. It serves an average daily ridership of 16,000 during WVU's academic year, but does not run in the summer.
