Suburbia's nocturnal spirits Last October I went to the picturesque town of Carmel on the California to attend the opening reception and artist talk at the exhibition of Bill Owens on Suburbia. On the way back I drove by a liquor store in Moss Landing, turned back, and took some handheld photos at low light. I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from two RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. The Santa Cruz County Railroad Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Freedom, California, dedicated to preserving the history of railroads in Santa Cruz County. The society was founded in 1981 and has since accumulated a vast collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the area's railroad history.

The society operates a museum that showcases this collection, which includes vintage locomotives, cabooses, and other railroad equipment. Ephemeral dream in January we went to the Uvas Canyon County Park in Morgan Hill, located in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The creek had a lot of water because of extended rain. Santa Cruz / surf’s edge (# 2023) Same house as adjacent picture, just pulled back some to show beach culture. If you zoom in on the left side of the picture, you can see quite a few surfers waiting for a wave in an area that looks not very promising in terms of wave action. And then at the bottom, you can see it’s a popular sunning area – the high that April day was around 70F, but luckily almost no breeze.

Chinese Burial Ground A portion of Evergreen was dedicated for burials within the Chinese community at the turn of the 20th century. In California's early decades as a state Chinese labor was absolutely crucial, yet discrimination was the norm. It came to a head with 1882's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Exclusion_Act" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Chinese Exclusion Act</a>, the first of America's many racist immigration laws, which effectively halted immigration and facilitated increased deportation. In the 21st century a <a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=132265" rel="noreferrer nofollow">much bigger marker</a> was installed with historical and interpretive signs, but I'm glad the original from 1901 was left as is.
