The new Elk River Trails, part of the Pioneer Trails Network runs through Gassaway. This trail follows a former railway and train station that has now been transformed into an event center with an event field and bandstand. It connects various towns and offers scenic pathways, making it an ideal spot for hikers, bikers, and runners to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
The 73-mile Elk River trail winds through Braxton and Clay County, and the 102-mile Elk River Water Trail flows from Sutton to Charleston, WV. These trails are included in the Pioneer Trail Network that connects to the Ohio River. A study stated that for the Elk River Trails, a 4-million dollar investment into the four trail towns of Gassaway, Clay, Sutton, and Clendenin during the next 10 years could result in more than 390 million dollars in economic impact in the region over 15 years.
The river provides excellent fishing opportunities and is ideal for leisure floating and kayaking. Unlike the whitewater rivers in West Virginia, this river is family-friendly and can be safely navigated by users of all ages and abilities. Nicholas and Webster counties are both working on enhancing their recreation amenities and improving connectivity to Snowshoe Resort to take advantage of an established recreation hub. Every county or community has the opportunity to create recreation-related businesses such as rental shops, restaurants, and commercial and lodging establishments and to showcase local artisans, musicians, and unique town history.
This project aims to provide infrastructure and support services for community and economic development in all trail town communities within the Pioneer Network. The goal is to develop trail towns in the Pioneer Network region by leveraging the state's thriving tourism industry. The approach will be comprehensive and regional, with an emphasis on distressed counties. It will include infrastructure development, facility construction, and ancillary activities necessary to create prosperous and thriving communities. The strategies used will address various needs identified by communities and can involve county, state, and federal entities.
The strategy builds on the success of Advantage Valley's FASTER WV initiative to facilitate the start-up and expansion of businesses with:
1.Develop marketing materials to recruit Elk River Trails entrepreneurs and support existing businesses.
2.Place business outreach ambassadors in Braxton and Clay Counties to recruit and link entrepreneurs to FASTER WV and other resources.
3.Provide coaching and technical assistance awards to help entrepreneurs' start-up efforts. These awards can support training, marketing, and other essential aspects of starting a business.
4.Implement community improvement projects to make the trail towns more attractive for tourists.
5.Implement a façade renovation grant program for "Main Street" businesses.

Their strategy is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Rural Development (RD), Rural Partners Network (RPN) SMART project approach. This approach has four key strategies, namely:
1. Building on each region's competitive advantage and leveraging the marketplace
2. Establishing and maintaining a robust regional infrastructure
3. Creating revitalized, healthy, and resilient communities
4. Developing talented and innovative people.

RPN
The Rural Partners Network (RPN) is a government program that aims to assist rural communities in finding resources and funding to create job opportunities, build infrastructure, and support long-term economic stability. This network comprises federal agencies and commissions that work directly with rural communities to enhance their prosperity through job creation, infrastructure development, and community improvement. Led by USDA Rural Development, members of the RPN collaborate to identify resources to help rural people build the futures they envision for the unique places they call home.

RPN deploys federal staff to selected RPN Community Networks located across the United States. These RPN Liaisons collaborate with small, rural communities to understand their needs and the importance of leveraging the programs and resources of various funders and assistance providers to achieve their goals. The Liaisons provide assistance to local individuals in navigating programs, building relationships, and identifying community-driven solutions.

Participating RPN agencies and offices (rural.gov/about#block-views-block-partners-partners-listing) are also joining forces to promote rural priorities as federal programs and policies are developed to address funding gaps, increase access to technical assistance and ensure equitable access to federal funding.
