Cyan Worlds Headquarters, Newport Highway, Mead, WA Built in 1995, this whimsical Postmodern-style building was designed by Ago Studios and constructed as the headquarters of Cyan Worlds, Inc., the creators of the Myst series of video games, and the oldest surviving independent game studio in the United States. The building features a red brick, buff brick, and textured concrete block exterior, a side-gable standing seam metal roof with a front gable, metal-frame casement windows, a daylight basement, two side entrances accessed via bridges, and a rear terrace surrounded by large stones and coniferous trees. The building’s most distinctive feature, however, is the main entrance, which sports a detached wall and open doorway at one end of the pedestrian bridge to the main entrance with two large stone piers flanking a large opening, appearing as if it was broken off from the main entrance bay and moved towards the parking lot, with an irregularly-shaped opening on the building’s facade, which corresponds to the same shape as the detached wall, which is filled with an entrance door and large glass storefront. The main entrance appears to be based on the work of SITE, or Sculpture in the Environment, an architecture firm founded by James Wines, which created multiple stores for the Best Products Company in the 1970s, many of which feature similar main entrances to the one found on the Cyan Worlds Headquarters. Inside, the building features many unique spaces that appear influenced by the environments in the Myst game series, utilizing various unconventional materials, very distinct ceilings and walls, and decorative artifacts from the Myst game series. The building today remains the home of Cyan Worlds, Inc., and is the place where memorable stories and beautiful virtual environments are created.
